Padded Shorts? I Can’t Decide

One of the things I’m not very good at is indecision. Whether it’s my own or other’s, it makes me more than a little nuts. So I’m actually quite good and well practiced at being decisive. I mean I found “my” bike after only three test rides. But now I find myself in the uncomfortable position of being unable to decide whether or not I need or want  padded shorts to ride.

I’m generally very comfortable in the saddle for about 6 miles (approximately 40-45 minutes) but after about 8 miles my tush begins to complain. My longest ride to date has been close to 10 miles and I was definitely ready to be off the bike. After a few minutes though, I felt like I could have gone for another ride. Part of my dilemma is this: I’ve only had my bike for a little over a week so conditioning is a factor, but how much? Will not having some padding for my sit bones keep me from taking longer rides? The other part of the issue is that I ride my bike almost every day…that’s several pairs of padded shorts or padded underwear, if I decide to go that route, yet another decision. Perhaps my only way out of this quagmire of uncertainty is to simply get one pair of padded something and see how that goes.
Do you ride padded or not?

I ride because it's fun. It's also healthy, good for the environment, and my gas budget but if it wasn’t fun, none of that would matter. It's what gets me on my bike almost every day, even when I'm tired, not feeling my best, or just not in the mood. No other form of "exercise" has equaled it. I used to love to run but I was injury-prone and couldn't do it every day. I certainly couldn't jog down to the store and come home with dinner. Walking is okay but definitely falls around midpoint on the fun scale. I enjoy it, especially when I'm walking with a friend, but am not exhilarated by it. So I ride.

  1. I don't use padded shorts, I have a comfy saddle just like this one:

Did 13 miles on one ride last week and my heiney felt just fine. 🙂

  2. Hey, Sarah! Thanks for the link. That does indeed look like a comfy seat.

  3. I use bike shorts while riding my roadbike — they are essential! But, I don't for riding my mountain bike. My mountain bike has a very comfy seat.

  4. I ride with padding on my road bike. When I ride my mountain bike with road tires I just wear whatever…the shorts help but you might also look up how to sit on the seat…you are supposed to ride with your two bones kind of teetering on the bumps on the seat. Seems awkward at first.

Also there are padded mountain bike shorts where the snug part is under loosly fitted shorts…I have some of those too.

    Happy Riding 🙂

  5. I'm doing pretty good this week. My sit bones aren't as tender and the bike is definitely becoming more comfortable at longer distances.

  6. Just bought a pair of Andaimo padded underwear. Will give them a try this week and see how it goes.

  7. I hope whatever you decide…that you are comfortable as that is most important…my cruiser has a wonderfully padded seat and seems to do just fine…but if i were to get a mountain bike i would probably like some padded shorts…

  8. I've ordered a pair of padded shorts and a pair of padded underwear. So I'll post about whether or not it makes a differeence once I've compared them.
