Bike and Haircut…Double the Fun

Yesterday was my big commute to get a haircut. The weather was gorgeous—68 and sunny with a gentle breeze. I came home from the gym after a leg workout that left me sweaty but energized, grabbed some lunch, and headed out. It was a relatively quick 4.7-mile ride there, mostly downhill and mostly trail. At the salon, I wallowed in the luxury of getting my hair washed that in some respects seemed silly because I was just going to put my helmet back on but I love having someone wash my hair so what the heck. After a quick cut and blow dry, I was out the door again and on my bike. Honestly, I felt like a kid riding home from the candy store, unencumbered and free. Even the uphill grade was fun…even the really, really steep parts. My hair was a little flatter (if not a total helmet head) but it was so worth it!

I ride because it's fun. It's also healthy, good for the environment, and my gas budget but if it wasn’t fun, none of that would matter. It's what gets me on my bike almost every day, even when I'm tired, not feeling my best, or just not in the mood. No other form of "exercise" has equaled it. I used to love to run but I was injury-prone and couldn't do it every day. I certainly couldn't jog down to the store and come home with dinner. Walking is okay but definitely falls around midpoint on the fun scale. I enjoy it, especially when I'm walking with a friend, but am not exhilarated by it. So I ride.
