National Bike Challenge 2013

After a long winter, during which I didn’t get a lot of biking in (ergo the dearth of posts), my cycling has really taken off. Seriously, I can’t get enough of it and I ride almost every day, whether it’s just for fun or for transport (which also falls under the fun category). I’m probably in the best biking shape of my life so I must have been doing something right at the gym all winter long. On most days I get somewhere between 10-12 miles in and have started taking longer rides on the weekends.

I joined the National Bike Challenge 2013 and that has further fueled my pedaling addiction. You score points by logging in miles and at the end of each month you’re eligible for prizes. You can be as competitive as you want or not at all. It’s all about getting people on their bikes. If you haven’t joined the Challenge, you should. It’s fun and it’s free. For the month of May I logged in 270 miles, 155 of which were for transportation. I saved about $33 in gas, 103 pounds of CO2, and burned over 11,000 calories.

But the best motivator of all is that riding makes me happy. I often find myself laughing or singing as I cruise along and I’m always smiling!

I ride because it's fun. It's also healthy, good for the environment, and my gas budget but if it wasn’t fun, none of that would matter. It's what gets me on my bike almost every day, even when I'm tired, not feeling my best, or just not in the mood. No other form of "exercise" has equaled it. I used to love to run but I was injury-prone and couldn't do it every day. I certainly couldn't jog down to the store and come home with dinner. Walking is okay but definitely falls around midpoint on the fun scale. I enjoy it, especially when I'm walking with a friend, but am not exhilarated by it. So I ride.
